It depends on the clearance height and ventilation of your specific setup. As a general rule, open-air pergolas with good airflow are more suitable than fully enclosed structures, and we always recommend checking local fire codes before lighting up. When in doubt, positioning your fire pit toward the open side of a pergola gives you the best of both worlds.
A fitted cover is the simplest way to extend the life of your fire pit through changing seasons. For wood burning models, fully extinguish and remove ash before covering, and keep the unit dry to prevent rust on metal components. Storing propane tanks separately in a ventilated area is also good practice during long periods of non-use.
